Hearth-shaft furnaces

The MAERZ hearth-shaft furnace is a self-contained furnace system consisting of a hearth section with integrated melting shaft. Hearth-shaft furnaces are available in a stationary and a tiltable version.

While the shaft section is responsible for melting the copper scrap, the molten copper is collected and deslagged in the hearth section. The scrap material is charged into the shaft with a skip.

Burners are mounted radially around the lower shaft section and procide the melting energy. The waste gases travel upwards through the shaft to preheat the solid scrap in the upper part of the shaft. The molten copper scrap flows into the hearth for keeping the melt warm and for further treatment.

Production capacities of up to 90 t/h have been implemented.

Advantages

  • Fast and continuous melting
  • Optimized thermal efficiency
  • Optimized deslagging of the liquid copper
  • Preheating of scrap material by the countercurrent off-gas stream
  • Operation flexibility due to buffer function of the hearth
  • Environmentally friendly working procedure due to off-gas hoods and slag and afterburning chamber
